(SPRINGFIELD) GOV. PRITZKER REFUSES TAXPAYER MONEY TO PAY FOR BEARS STADIUM
Gov. J.B. Pritzker says Illinois could convene a special legislative session this summer, but he opposes any tax increases to help finance a new Chicago Bears stadium.
Speaking in Chicago, Pritzker said any agreement must avoid using taxpayer money for a privately owned stadium. He added that lawmakers could return for a session if consensus is reached on Bears-related proposals, with veto session dates already set for later this year.
The remarks come as stadium talks have stalled and the Bears explore a potential move to Hammond, Indiana. Pritzker criticized the team’s changing positions and said Illinois taxpayers should not be used to support stadiums for billionaire owners.
Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers are drafting proposals aimed at keeping the Bears in Illinois, including changes to tax policy and financing rules for large private development projects.
