ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (04/30/2024)

(SPRINGFIELD) While no cases have been reported in Illinois, federal agencies confirmed the detection of bird flu in diary herds in eight states across the nation. The Illinois Departments of Agriculture and Public Health are working together, closely monitoring the situation, plus jointly coordinating prevention and response measures. This includes working with producer groups and partner organizations to promote education to the state’s veterinarians and cattle farmers on the clinical signs of H5N1 influenza, so that potential infections can be quickly identified and then contained.

(SPRINGFIELD) An upstate lawyer is charged with theft and money laundering for allegedly stealing more than $60,000 from an Illinois non-profit organization. The Riverwoods Police Department issued an arrest warrant for 66 year old Terry Campo, who recently turned himself in at the Lake County Jail. Investigators say when the Illinois House Foundation dissolved, the group authorized Campo to transfer funds to a similar foundation, also led by Campo, however police say the lawyer deposited the money into his own account.

(CHAMPAIGN/URBANA) Two central Illinois firemen are being recognized for the rescue of a marathon runner who went into cardiac arrest during a race this past Saturday. Officials say Calvin Kerns of the Urbana Fire Department and Sean Manuel of the Champaign Fire Department were both dispatched to a park to respond to the man’s health situation. They found him lying on the trail without a pulse and after CPR was administered, the marathon runner became alert again and was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

(LAKE IN THE HILLS) A carnival in Lake in the Hills was shut down this past Saturday night due to unruly crowds and other issues. Authorities there in McHenry County say that while multiple fights broke out, there were no reports of gunshots and/or injuries. The Lake in the Hills Chamber of Commerce says the unexpected surge in attendance, fueled by the pleasant weather, led to overcrowding, including a large number of unchaperoned teens. While there were a few arrests, most were simply asked to leave the carnival location.
