ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (09/19/2024)

(CANTON) A Canton, Illinois teenager is in good condition after being rescued by Arizona authories earlier this week. Fulton County authorities are reporting that 16 year old Railyn Churchill was abducted by a Wisconsin man nearly two weeks ago but was found when Phoenix, Arizona police arrested Jack Daniels on separate charges. The Canton Police and Fulton County Sheriff’s Office worked with several agencies to find the suspect and teen, including the Illinois State Police, the FBI, and other authorities from various states.

(SPRINGFIELD) There is growing opposition to carbon capture projects in Illinois, that some say threaten statewide drinking water supplies. It was just last Friday that an incident occurred in Decatur where corrosion in one of Archer Daniels-Midland Company’s carbon sequestration wells allowed carbon dioxide to leak. Although no one was injured, the incident did raise concerns of safety to the regional aquifer near Mahomet that serves nearly one million customers in over a dozen central Illinois counties. State Senator Chapin Rose of Mahomet has since filed legislation that he and others say needs to be passed immediately to protect statewide aquifers from CO2 injection and contamination.

(CHICAGO) Multiple media outlets report that the Chicago White Sox and developer Related Midwest invited lawmakers, business leaders, and other VIPs on a downtown riverboat tour this past Monday. The boat docked at the undeveloped, 62 acre South Loop parcel of land called “The 78,” which the team has proposed as the site for a new ballpark. While the White Sox’s current lease at Guaranteed Rate Field on the city’s South Side runs through 2029, the team has played there since 1991. The White Sox currently has the worst record in Major League Baseball with only 36 wins out of 153 games to date this year.

(MARION) One of Illinois’ state parks is turning 75 years old with a public celebration set for this Saturday. Located along Illinois Route 37 about one mile south of Goreville or 12 miles south of Marion, Ferne Clyffe State Park was named for its abundance of ferns within the park, plus its rock formations make it a popular destination for climbers who can scale about 150 climbing routes across eight different walls, a feature that is not available at any other state park in Illinois. Ferne Clyffe is one of 61 state parks managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. All are invited to the park’s 75th anniversary party.
