(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois Nutrient Research & Education Council (NREC) has chosen nine new projects for 2026-2027 research grants, representing a total of $1.247 million in funding commitments. With more funds available this year, the NREC was able to support additional projects that fulfill its mission of advancing research and education on fertilizer efficiency, nutrient loss prevention, and maximizing economic returns for growers. The awards include both new and renewed projects from the University of Illinois, Southern Illinois University, and Purdue University, with the focus on nitrogen rate efficiency, on phosphorus loss, and on cover crops, plus other studies on soil health, phosphate usage, watershed impacts, and more. Illinois NREC is funded through a $3 per ton assessment on bulk fertilizer bought in the state. About $40 million has been invested in research projects since the start of NREC in 2012.
