NEWTON CITY COUNCIL NOVEMBER 2024 MEETING RECAP

The Newton City Council convened on Tuesday night, where several key decisions were made:

  • Bill Approvals: The Council authorized the payment of $500,646 for prepaid bills and $129,357 for other accounts.
  • Alley Vacation: A decision was made to vacate the north/south alley between Lots 6 and 7 in Block 8 of the Original Town Subdivision.
  • Hoerr Construction Payments: Two payments were approved to Hoerr Construction—$66,762 for sewer relining and $77,037 for storm sewer relining repairs.
  • TIF Applications:
    • The Council approved a TIF application from Harvest Biofuels Inc., which will receive up to $2,125,024 (15% of the project cost) reimbursed annually based on the tax increment following the project’s completion.
    • A TIF application from St. Pierre Oil was also approved, awarding $420.
  • Christmas Bonuses: Full-time and part-time employees who have been with the City for at least 3 months will receive Christmas bonuses.
  • Meeting Schedule: The 2025 Newton City Council meeting schedule was approved as presented.
  • Christmas Lights: The Council noted that the Christmas lights in Peterson Park are up and fully operational.
  • Closed Session: No actions were taken after a closed session to discuss litigation, real estate, municipal power, and personnel matters.
